Im Norden Albaniens, an der Grenze zu Montenegro, liegt Shkodra, meine Heimatstadt. Dort bin ich geboren und aufgewachsen. Shkodra gilt als Kulturhauptstadt Albaniens – kaum eine andere Stadt hat die soziokulturelle und politische Entwicklung des Landes so nachhaltig geprägt. Dank ihrer bewundernswerten geografischen Lage bot Shkodra schon früh ideale Voraussetzungen für Wachstum und Entwicklung. Über Jahrhunderte hinweg war die Stadt ein wichtiger Kontakt- und Begegnungspunkt großer Reiche, darunter das Römische, das Osmanische sowie das Österreichisch-Ungarische Reich. Die Spuren dieser Epochen sind bis heute in der Architektur, der Gastronomie und dem wirtschaftlichen Leben der Stadt sichtbar.

Sobald man in die Stadt einfährt, wird man vom Rozafaschloss begrüßt, das sinnbildlich die gesamte Geschichte Shkodras in sich trägt. Mit einem Alter von rund 2.400 Jahren besitzt es einen außergewöhnlichen historischen Wert und hat die Stadt im Laufe ihrer Geschichte mehrfach geschützt. Das Schloss liegt am Zusammenfluss der Flüsse Drin und Buna und ermöglicht einen beeindruckenden Überblick über die Stadt und ihre Umgebung. Nachts, wenn es beleuchtet ist, verleiht das Rozafaschloss Shkodra eine ganz besondere Atmosphäre.

In northern Albania, on the border with Montenegro, lies Shkodra, my hometown. I was born and raised there. Shkodra is considered the cultural capital of Albania; hardly any other city has shaped the country's sociocultural and political development so meaningfully. Thanks to its remarkable geographical location, Shkodra offered ideal conditions for growth and development from early on. For centuries, the city was an important point of contact and encounter for great empires, including the Roman, Ottoman, and Austro-Hungarian empires. The traces of these epochs are still visible today in the city's architecture, gastronomy, and economic life.

As soon as you enter the city, you are greeted by Rozafa Castle, which symbolically embodies the entire history of Shkodra. With an age of about 2,400 years, it possesses extraordinary historical value and has protected the city multiple times throughout its history. The castle is located at the confluence of the Drin and Buna rivers and offers an impressive overview of the city and its surroundings. At night, when it is illuminated, Rozafa Castle gives Shkodra a very special atmosphere.
