Olentzero

Iara (exchange student) tells us about traditions from home

I will talk about some traditions in Spain. It’s a Christian country, so everything is decorated with lights, Christmas trees, Nativity Scene representations, carols, etc. during December and January. On the 24th we usually gather with family to eat dinner and on the 25th we meet again to eat (a lot). Furthermore, we have dinner on the 31st too, and we celebrate New Year (I do it in my village) by eating 12 grapes before the start of the year at 00h. This is done by eating 1 grape in each 12 seconds before the exact start of the next year. After that, we drink a lot and we party in cities while dressing up until the morning of the 1st of January, that is when we have hangover-breakfast with friends. Regarding the presents, we have the Santa Claus presents (on the 25th of December) and The Three Wise Men presents on the 6th or 7th of January (we celebrate once again by eating with the family and watching the Ride of The Wise Men, which come by camel, and then usually do a parade). Also, in my region, we have Olentzero; which is an old man who comes by ox from the mountains on the 24th of December and brings coal and a present for the kids (and they give away free hot chocolate, soup, hot red wine and sandwiches in the night on the streets).
