What does pigNplay look like?

... this and other questions also confronted the project team around pigNplay at the beginning of 2021.

- two-dimensional or three-dimensional?

- photorealistic, playful or something in between?

- how freely can I move and what can I touch?

All of this had to be found out, while at the same time the groundwork had to be laid to enable calculations based on scientific data for emissions of nitrogen compounds in pig farms. Input and output factors were dertermined, system interrelationships summarized, feedbacks and interactions illuminated. At the same time, a didactic concept was needed. What should be communicated, what do the users want to learn? And furthermore: Which measures can be taken at all and how important are they, how well can they be implemented and how effective can they be?

It was a great relief to be able to see the first animations very early in the project. The 3D look was exciting, showed possibilities, motivated all the more to move forward with development. Everyone in the team had a clear picture in mind of how everything could look. Now we were to find the common denominator that reflected our collective vision in many inspiring discussions.

After a few adjustments here and there, pigNplay moved away from three-dimensional rendering and a slightly cartoon-like 2D graphic won the hearts of the project team. Of course, many decision factors led to this development, among which was the lower computational requirement for the final user device. However, for us, the new style leads to one fact above all: we feel comfortable.

In the following overview we would like to share the development of the last months with you by means of some pictures:

March 2021: 3Dv1 (1st pre-model)

x

Replica (based on template) of a farm with simple animations to demonstrate a 3D environment using the "Unity" physics engine.

March 2021: 3Dv2 (2nd pre-model)

x

Extension of the template for the demonstration of a 3D environment ("straw pose").

April 2021: 2Dv1 (3rd pre-model)

x

Reduced pre-model to simulate a fattening cycle in conventional posture (as 2D working environment).

September 2021: 2Dv5 (pioneer model)

x

"Pioneer model" (internal designation) for the development of a three-level representation concept. Map view, location view, building view. [The program was presented at the "Co-Prototyping-Workshop" on Sept. 28, 2021]

October 2021: 2Dv6 to 2Dv12 (model 1 beta)

x

Simulation of feed phases and their influence on nitrogen emissions during fattening, integrated into a three-level representation concept.

December 2021: 2Dv13 (current status)

x

Current status: Conversion and extension of model 1 to a dynamic program structure.
