Double degree Ageing Sciences / Gerontology & Management of Social Services - important facts

Complementary competences: By combining the Master's degree programmes in Ageing Sciences / Gerontology and Management of Social Services, you will acquire extensive specialist knowledge in both the scientific understanding of ageing and the strategic management and organisation of social services. This dual expertise will make you a sought-after specialist in an increasingly ageing society.

Efficient study: The two degree programmes are designed in such a way that they complement each other in terms of content and are optimally interlinked. The additional workload is manageable, while you have the opportunity to obtain two fully-fledged Master's degrees within two years of studying.

Broader career prospects: The double degree opens up a wide range of career paths - from management positions in care facilities and advisory roles in senior citizens' policy to management and leadership positions in social organisations. Two Master's degrees provide an ideal foundation for a career in science, too.

Networking opportunities: Benefit from our networks in both disciplines. Meet experts from science and practice and build up valuable contacts for your professional future.

Innovative teaching: Our lecturers from both departments offer you an innovative, research-based and at the same time practice-orientated education that gives you the tools to competently master complex challenges in dealing with demographic change and the provision of social services.

Step by step to a double degree programme:

  1. Make sure your Bachelor's or comparable degree is suitable for both Master's degree programmes (Ageing Sciences / Gerontology and Management of Social Services).

  2. Prepare the form "Parallel studies: Additional information (in German)" and save it after processing.
    • Indicate on page 2 which study programme should be the first and which the second. The first degree programme forms the basis, the second builds on this. A double degree programme is possible in both variants, but leads to different courses of study, see "Course of study".
    • On page 4, you must justify the extent to which the double degree programme is a useful addition and simultaneous study in both degree programmes is possible.

  3. Apply for both degree programmes. First select the intended first degree programme and upload all requested documents plus the form from step 2. Then add the intended second degree programme via "Add application". Make sure that both applications have the status "Received" at the end.

  4. The Enrolment Office will check your applications. Please log in to the application portal regularly to retrieve new status reports and notifications.

You can also start the double degree programme later, even if you have already started or completed one of the two Master's programmes.

Your first degree programme forms the basis of the double degree course and can be completed within the standard period of study (4 semesters). The second degree programme builds on this and can also be completed in the standard period of study if it runs efficiently. You decide which first and second degree programme you want to do. The Master's degree programmes are optimally coordinated. The double degree programme consists of the following components:

  • In the compulsory elective and specialisation areas of the one, you study compulsory modules of the other.
  • Empirical research methods are mutually recognised: If you complete the corresponding module in one of the two degree programmes (usually in the first degree programme), it will be recognised in the other degree programme (usually in the second degree programme) upon application for the equivalent.
  • Mutual recognition is possible for the field research projects in individual cases, provided the modules are thematically and empirically related. This constellation depends on the respective course programme and cannot be guaranteed for every semester. Early consultation and agreement with the module coordinators of both modules is therefore recommended.
  • Only one Master's thesis: The Master's thesis module (usually in the first degree programme) will be recognised for the other degree programme, provided that supervision with an interdisciplinary topic was guaranteed by examiners from both subjects.
  • Each degree programme has core modules that are unique to it. These modules cannot be used for the other degree programme.

For mutual recognition of the empirical research methods, the Master's thesis module and, where possible, the field research projects, please use the application for recognition (in German). The application is possible as soon as a successfully completed partner module is registered in your student account (transcript of records).

In order to optimise the double degree programme, we provide you with recommended courses of study with procedural information. Depending on which is your first degree programme and therefore the basis of the double degree programme, please use the corresponding variant as a guide:

In principle, no fees are charged for studying at the University of Vechta (tuition fees). Only the semester fee is payable. This covers certain administrative costs and allows you to take advantage of benefits such as discounts in the refectory or free use of buses and trains in Lower Saxony.

There are no additional fees, e.g. special fees for a parallel degree programme or a double degree.
