The Edited Book "Sustainable Development of Universities: Insights and Perspectives on Comprehensive Institutional Transformation" has been published [2024/02]

What contribution can universities make to sustainable development in the areas of teaching, research, operations, and transfer? How can the comprehensive institutional sustainable development (whole institution approach) of universities be achieved? These questions were the focus of the research project "Sustainability at Universities (HOCH-N)" with eleven German universities. The recently released edited book presents and discusses the results (in German). The volume is available for free in Open Access (PDF) or can be obtained as a paid print edition.

New Project "Impact Assessment for Action Competence (IMP>ACT)" [2024/01]

IMP>ACT is funded by Horizon Europe (HORIZON-CL5-2023-D1-01-10) with a total of approximately five million euros. The consortium is led by Utrecht University (Netherlands). The partners in the consortium will develop an assessment framework to better understand the impacts of sustainability and climate change education. The number of initiatives in this field has grown enormously, but due to a lack of insights into their quality, there is a significant need for impact assessment. The IMP>ACT project started in January and will run for four years. The project consists of several phases, including a theoretical phase where researchers explicitly define what learners should learn and how it can be measured. Another crucial phase involves six case studies to test the assessment framework with various users. During this phase, organizations that provide sustainability and climate change education will evaluate their own impact using the tools developed. Utrecht University leads the consortium, with universities and research institutes from Germany, Belgium, Sweden, Italy, Serbia, and the Czech Republic as partners. In addition, organizations actively involved in sustainability and climate change education, such as an educational association and a scout organization, as well as a government agency responsible for policy in this field, are participating. (IMP>ACT partners: Utrecht University (Freudenthal Institute and U-Talent), Karlstad University, University of Vechta, University of Antwerp, Masaryk University, INVALSI: National Institute for the Evaluation of the Education and Training System, Centre for the Promotion of Science in Serbia, Keep Sweden Tidy, DGHochN: German Society for Sustainability at Higher Education Institutions, Flemish Government: Centre for Sustainable Education, Scouting Institute in the Czech Republic.)

SUSTAIN - Playing Minecraft for a Better Future [2023/05]

The project SUSTAIN - "Biodiversity Education for Sustainable Development" aims to educate children as well as adults about current problems like the loss of our biodiversity and the increasing air pollution. This is done with the help of the still popular game "Minecraft". Three different scenarios are currently being developed in which the students have to solve tasks, save animals and plants or build recycling centers, for example. The project is funded by the EU Erasmus+ program (Key Action 2) and implemented since 2022 by the University of Vechta in collaboration with Asociación Mundus and Formative Footprint (Spain), Atermon (Netherlands) and the school Themistoklis and Asserted Knowledge - AKNOW (Greece). The project is expected to run until February 2024. More info about the project can be found here.

New Project "Senatra - Service Learning and Sustainable Transformation at Universities" [2022/10]

Senatra will be funded for three years (October 2022 to September 2025) with a total of approximately one million euros by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research in the program "Transformation Paths for Sustainable Universities." The consortium project is led by the University of Vechta and will be overseen by Prof. Dr. Marco Rieckmann, Professor of Higher Education Development. Additionally, the University of Bremen, Otto von Guericke University Magdeburg, Catholic University of Eichstätt-Ingolstadt, and the student network n e.V. are collaborating on the consortium project. The overarching research question being investigated is: "To what extent can the use of service learning in higher education contribute to an institutional transformation of universities towards sustainability?" In this context, service learning courses will be developed, implemented, and accompanied by research within the project. Service learning refers to a special form of learning through engagement, where students collaborate with partners in practice and work on socially relevant issues. The aim is for students to contribute to the sustainable development of their universities and societal transformation in line with the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

"One University - One Book" | University of Vechta receives funding for literature project [2022/04]

The Stifterverband and the Klaus Tschira Foundation support ten universities throughout Germany in the project "One University - One Book", which spend a semester in various activities dealing with a literary work of their own choice. On the initiative of the Centre for Teacher Education (ZfLB), the University of Vechta applied and - like the other award-winning universities - will now receive 10,000 euros for the implementation. "Tiefenlager" by Annette Hug is on the programme. The novel will be used as a starting point to examine socially relevant, politically topical and future-oriented questions about nuclear power and alternative energy sources in dialogue-oriented forms - with the participation of various subjects - together with students. "We also expect new impulses for the sustainability process at the University of Vechta from dealing with the novel 'Tiefenlager'," emphasises project leader Prof. Dr. Marco Rieckmann. This sub-project will address the following questions: What role does transformative education play in the development of young people's knowledge, competences, attitudes, values and readiness for engagement as well as empowerment? How can young people be empowered to respond appropriately to sustainability challenges and to participate in sustainable transformation? How can a dialogue and interaction of youth and young adults with today's decision-makers and thus intergenerational education processes be enabled? The 4N research network is funded with 6 million euros by the Lower Saxony Ministry of Science and Culture.

Innovation and Co-Learning Labs in the Oldenburg Münsterland [2021/02]

The team of the EU project "SDGs Labs - Making the SDGs our business", led by Prof. Dr. Marco Rieckmann (University of Vechta), conducted several SDGs Labs with various stakeholders from the agricultural and food production sector in the Oldenburg Münsterland region (districts Vechta and Cloppenburg) in January and February 2021. The aim of the labs was to try out methods with which different target groups in the sector can break down the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) for their own company or organisation in order to translate them into concrete and innovative approaches for action and thus tap into the innovative potential of these goals. In addition to this region, participants from companies and cooperatives in the agricultural and food production sector as well as representatives from universities and local politics came together in the four European project regions Austria (Vienna), Italy (South Tyrol) as well as Northern and Southern Portugal to exchange approaches to implementing the SDGs in the agricultural and food production sector in their regions. In line with the slogan "Making the SDGs our business", we are calling on companies and other actors in the sector to put the SDGs on their own agendas and develop approaches to contribute to them as well as to develop potentials for innovation through them", Prof. Dr. Marco Rieckmann explains.
