Project description:

The overarching goal of the project in Tanzania is to combat the rampant violence against children and young people in the school context and to combat discrimination against people with disabilities in Tanzania. The proposed project will contribute to this by establishing a non-violent and inclusive school in a rural and underdeveloped region of Tanzania.

To achieve the project goals, Dr. Sr. Felista Tangi has now founded a non-violent and inclusive secondary school in Nyashishi in the province of Mwanza in Tanzania. The school is designed for 250 pupils from primarily rural areas, orphaned children and those from financially disadvantaged families who are particularly affected by school dropouts and violence. A total of 20% of the school places are reserved for children with inclusion needs. The school particularly supports children with albinism, who are often seen as bewitched in the rural province of Mwanza and are at risk of massive violence. The school uses modern classroom management concepts to combat violence, bullying, and discrimination, based on materials developed by Stein and Steenkamp as part of the project against school violence. These materials are available free of charge in Kiswahili on a website for teachers (http://www.against-violence-at-schools-in-tanzania.com/swa/about-this-great-project-fighting-school-violence-in-tanzania-sw/). In addition, all students with special needs receive coaching and mentoring from a student teacher from St. Augustine University in Mwanza. As with other projects by Prof. Stein (such as the SKM program to support the training of teachers with a refugee background), this is expected to create a win-win situation for both the students and the pupils, who will gain concrete educational experiences in an inclusive and violence-free setting. The newly founded school receives academic advice and support from the Department of General Education at the University of Vechta. In order for the school to fully operate for all students, several positions are still open: chairs and tables for the classrooms, beds for the girls' dormitory in the boarding school, and a water supply.
