SUMMARY:Permanent European Conference for the Study of the Rural Landscape
(PECSRL) 2026: "Reconciling Challenges in rural Landscapes" | Gent and Spa
 (Belgium)
DESCRIPTION:Date: 7. - 13. September 2026\n\nLocations: Gent and Spa (Belgi
um)\n\nConference theme: Reconciling challenges in rural landscapes\n\nLand
scapes embody the continuous dialogue between people and land through time.
They can be read as palimpsests of the interaction between biophysical and
environmental processes and societies adapting and reshaping their surroun
dings. Main driving forces, such as demography, economy, politics, technolo
gy, and natural calamities, initiate a series of interacting landscape chan
ge processes.\n\nThe landscapes we live in today – the living landscapes –
are shaped by complex feedback loops, often leading to a polarisation of ge
ographical space. Densely populated areas are characterised by processes of
urbanisation, intensification, industrialisation and competition between l
and uses, while depopulation has led to ruralisation, land and settlement a
bandonment, the loss of the agricultural mosaic, and the decline of service
 s. As more people live in urban places than in rural areas and the rural po
pulation is declining, the relationship between urban and rural areas has c
hanged over time. However, the whole range of landscapes is currently facin
g similar challenges, such as climate change impacts, environmental degrada
tion, social inequality, … Landscapes with high and low human pressures hav
e different resilience and adaptability when it comes to responses to flood
ing and drought, biodiversity loss, food security, heritage protection, lan
dscape management, …\n\nThe challenge is how to study these over- and depop
ulated landscapes from a structural, functional and historical perspective.
How to understand the intertwining factors that play a role in landscapes?
How to strengthen urban-rural connections? How to regenerate empty landsca
pes, reduce regional disparities, and support landscape community resilienc
e?\n\nThe conference theme will focus on how to understand the process of f
inding balance or harmony among conflicting, opposing, contradictory demand
 s or interests in landscapes\n\nImportant dates\n\n31 January 2026 Deadline
for submission of sessions\n\n15 February 2026 Call for abstracts\n\n1 Apr
il 2026 Deadlines for submission of abstract\n\n15 April 2026 Notification
of acceptance of abstracts. Opening conference registrations\n\n1 June 2026
