Abstract

The North Sea Region is an economic powerhouse, with a high level of resource consumption and carbon emissions. The region has a large renewable energy potential and housing in the region has a huge potential for energy efficiency. However, the current level of adoption is not sufficient to meet the challenge of climate change and leaves much potential of eco-enterprise underdeveloped. Stronghouse takes up this challenge by analyzing the differences in financial and regulatory frameworks, housing cultures and strategies for citizen involvement. In a series of a large-scale field experiment, the chair of Management of Social Services will use smart metering and smartphone application in order to analyse if smart metering deliver benefits from individual energy efficiency change by merely applying the system or do even other factors like feedback information on own or other citizens’ energy use, active citizen engagement etc. trigger citizens’ energy saving efforts? Can monetary or non-monetary incentives support goal attainment? In sum, we expect the following positive outcomes for individuals and society:

  1. Correction of awareness bias on citizens in-home energy saving,
  2. Exploring alternative ways of citizens in-home energy saving,
  3. Active citizen participation on governmental climate change targets,
  4. Measurable energy savings

Keywords: field experiment, energy saving behaviour, smart meter, behavioural economics
