Certificate of International Management and Practical Ethics (CIME)

The increasing globalization of economy and society generates transformation processes of historical significance. Nowadays, transactions on worldwide markets and negotiations in international organizations take place more than ever in an international and intercultural context that puts traditional business practices, patterns of communication and decision-making processes under continuous review. At the same time, a multiplicity of heterogeneous requirements made by politics, the economy and civil society have to be taken into account and assimilated by business procedures. Thus, these days, international management presupposes abilities that exceed the usual ethical standards of management.

The courses for this certificate provide an interdisciplinary access to economic exchange and management processes. This certificate introduces and interrelates economic and philosophical perspectives as well as perspectives offered by the cultural sciences. In so doing, it enables students to acquire the competence needed for efficient management, which is also aware of its ethical responsibility. Upon completion of this certificate, the students will have attained a comprehensive set of competences related to both the concrete, practical skill of management studies and the capacity for ethical reflection about management. This will thus allow them to manage in accordance with economic rationality as well as social sustainability, and to do so in multicultural and international contexts.

The interdisciplinary character of this certificate is constituted by the combination of courses belonging to two academic disciplines: management studies and philosophy (more precisely philosophical ethics). This program offers both a clearly defined curriculum and the possibility for each student to place an emphasis on her or his personal, academic or professional interests. That is to say, the student is allowed to intensively focus on either management studies or on philosophical perspectives, without breaking the comprehensive interdisciplinary perspective of this certificate. Knowing how to find the right orientation and to act in an efficient way, which this certificate provides, always remains an applied knowledge that is relevant for practical organization.

The management studies courses offer up-to-date fundamental and advanced economic knowledge that is indispensable for strategic management. These courses particularly emphasize phenomena of business culture as well as of business ethics in a globalized economy.

The philosophy and practical ethics courses encompass the main philosophical approaches to moral responsibility in the economy and in organizations. Enquiring into the theories, arguments and problems related to property, justice and collective emotions, students will acquire a comprehensive ability for analysis, reflection and judgment about ethical issues.

All courses are seminars held in English. The examinations are also in English.
