Geographies of Rural Areas – Change via Globalization

The consecutive and research-oriented master’s degree programme Geographies of Rural Areas – Change via Globalization (Geographien ländlicher Räume – Wandel durch Globalisierung) is dedicated to the sustainable development of rural areas in the age of globalization.

Students attend courses on economic and social change processes in rural areas as well as on aspects of globalization and regional development. Seminars on planning and control in rural areas provide a starting point for scopes for design  resulting from research and application perspectives. In addition, seminars on research and professional practice are offered.

The most important unique characteristic of the research-oriented master’s degree programme is the focus on the geographies of rural areas and spatial aspects of globalization, which is uniterable in this combination in Germany.


Selected issues:

  • What drives globalization processes, currently and past?
  • How do global production systems work and what strategy do transnational companies pursue?
  • What consequences does globalization have for rural areas and how can new challenges be handled at regional level?
  • Which options for action do actors and stakeholders in rural areas have to face the challenges of globalization in a responsible and reflective manner?
  • What role can geography / geographers play in advancing alternative progressive globalization processes?

General information on application and registration deadlines

In the winter semester 2018/19, the degree course Master Geographies of Rural Areas – Change via Globalization is free of admission.

Admission requirements for the master’s degree programme Geographies of Rural Areas – Change via Globalization is a Bachelor or equivalent degree in a subject-specific  adequate study lasting at least six semesters.

Admission requirements

For a timely application examination and registration, we recommend that you apply until 07/15/2018, if you can prove at this time at least 150 CP or already have your bachelor's degree or another equivalent degree.

Your application must be received not later than 09/30/2018. However, the processing of the application and the sending of the admissions letter as well as the student documents can not be guaranteed until the start of session.

The master’s degree programme Geographies of Rural Areas – Change via Globalization prepares you for your future profession in three areas:

Contentual competence

The courses provide in-depth insights to explain the change of economy and society in the age of globalization, with a focus on the sustainable development of rural areas. Typical courses are seminars with a high proportion of scientific discourses from different perspectives. These contents are supplemented by regular lectures by regional, national and international experts from science and practice.

Methodical competence

You carry out your own studies and projects; Practice-oriented courses and a compulsory internship also give you the opportunity for professional orientation. In addition, the teaching of methodical competence plays a major role. These include study projects as well as GIS- and SPSS-based processing and analysis of data.

International/Intercultural competence

The command of foreign languages and international experience, including the development of intercultural competence, are becoming increasingly important. A stay abroad can take place at one of our partner universities or at a location of your choice. Teaching takes place in German and English; All examinations can be taken either in German or English.

The objectives of the master’s degree programme Geographies of Rural Areas – Change via Globalization are to give you the skills you need to enter successfully into the professional life.
